Borders Toys and Games Giveaway
November 19, 2009 by admin - Jennifer

This holiday, as you search for toys & games, Borders has made finding the perfect toy or game easier for those looking for high-quality educational gifts. The bookseller recently expanded its toys & games selection in more than 500 stores. Shelves are stocked with items from leading brands like Creativity for Kids, Thinkfun, Scientific Explorer, ALEX and Blue Orange Games. These brands are known for products that foster creativity and help to build cognitive skills in children.

I have recently been given the opportunity to shop at Borders newly expanded toy section at one of their locations here in Orlando. I was very impressed with the new layout. Awhile back their toy section was just put in a little corner that seemed cramped while all the books had a wider area for display, which is fine because as most of us know Borders is a book store. But I will say that on this trip the way I saw Borders changed. I can actually say that they have a very good selection of toys, some that we haven’t been able to find in other toy stores.
My daughter found Webkinz that she hasn’t been able to find any where else. Two of which were retired. For my youngest daughter I found Melissa & Doug toys which I absolutely love, and my son found a few magic kits that he wanted to get. I am shocked by the amount of toys and games they have in their store and will no longer view them as just a book store.

My kids were so excited to be let loose in the toy area, but I made them promise me one thing. They could each get something as long as we bought one toy for a less fortunate child. I was so proud of them. We ended up getting Webkinz, Big Trucks for my Nephew, a play Pizza set for my Niece as well as some Ni Hao Kai-Lan stuff for her birthday. And Color-forms…I freaked out and had my kids (and a few shoppers) looking at me funny when I found these. I haven’t seen a set since I was a kid and it brought back so many memories. So I bought a Yo Gabba Gabba set for my toddler. We had so much fun walking through the department and the staff was so friendly. And my favorite part was this shopping trip has finally got me excited about the upcoming holidays. It was a fun trip.

Special thanks to Borders who provided me with a gift card to shop their toys and games area for the holidays.

My daughter would love the Make Your Own Hand Puppet Kit. Very cute. I remember playing bingo a lot growing up. I love the Hello Kitty Big Roll Bingo. This would be great for my daughter because it is something she can do along with the rest of the family.

What a great selection of toys. My kids would love the Make Your Own Sock Puppet.
A toy that I remember playing was CandyLand. I think that this would be great for my kids to play today to help teach them how to play with good sportsmanship.
Thanks so much.

thanks again
Make your own sock puppet looks like a fun crafty project!
My First Backyard Explorer Kit would be fun, but it’d be even better if it were an actual “kit” and not a dvd. We had things that required imagination and doing, Tinker Toys, Lincoln Logs, etc. My 3yo niece loves to come and play with my kids’ Legos…and no electricity required.
They’d love the Make Your Own Hand Puppet Kit.
My children are grown but I would get the Magic Science Wizard’s Kit for my grandchildren.
I remember playing Dominos for hours on end. It’s a great child’s game because it’s simple, educational, and has variations to make it exciting. Unfortunately, there is no Dominos game on the list of toys for sell.
I’m subscribed via Google Reader.
I love their “Dora the Explorer: My First Crystal & Fizz Kit” It reminds me of when I was a kid. I grew lots of crystals when I was a kid. Fishbowls full of ‘em!
I loved LEGOs and had several sets in my childhood. I think they are timeless and would still make great toys for kids today. Playing LEGO needs creativity, imagination and patience, definitely a great choice for parents while picking toys.

I loved word games, particularly Scrabble, as a child and still love them today. I believe I did better throughout my career because I was good with words, a great habit for children then and now to cultivate.
I loved Monster at the End of the Book with Sesame Street’s Grover. It is still such fun for kids because it appeals to a child’s anticipation and love of surprises.

I remember having a Journal with a lock:)
I loved writing in it everyday( I found it in storge & laughed when I had seen some of the things that were written and that I had drawn in it:) I think that kids these day’s would benefit from a lot of the toys that we had when we were little, not like all of the electronics and things that they have now:( We grew up to be just fine without the xbox, wii, nintendo ds, out black and green computer screens, our bikes, and roller racers. Maybe that is what my son needs, is a big reality check without all of these things!

I remember spending hours playing with Lego. They are still great for kids. They foster imagination and are good for manual dexterity.
Well I am pretty old and didn’t find anything I had played with except dolls in general . I loved dolls and still have a collection. So I picked the American Girl mini Elizabeth Doll. She is dressed in an Elizabthan costume which reminds me of my beloved Bride Doll all decked out in her beautiful long dress. I believe dolls are still a good choice for kids as long as they are age appropriate ( as far as parts that detatch and could be swallowed by toddlers). Thank you.

S’match memory game. It was named differnt when I was a kid but it really helped with my memory. Children need more ways to have a good memory since the schools are not doing a very good job.

Borders sells books that are bundled with craft supplies such as “Potholders and Other Loopy Projects” by Klutz. When I was a girl I had a blast making potholders, with colorful cotton loops woven on a square metal frame, and giving them for presents to my mom and grandmothers. Crafts allow kids to be creative and feel pride in accomplishment.

Well, I’m so old that the Borders site didn’t have anything I actually remember playing with, but this comes close: Dora’s My First Crystal and Fizz Adventure Kit. Of course there was no Dora, but it has the same principles as my old crystal growing kit.
I think this is good for kids today for several reasons. One, it is great to be able to watch your crystals grow, and this is a good lead-in to making homemade sugar crystal candy. Two, it is a great way to combat the wrong idea that science is hard or boring, this shows how fun science can be. Three, it’s geared toward girls and I consider that a plus because so many science-related activities that are sold to kids are more geared for boys. Four, it’s one of those “look what I did” things for kids, gives them a sense of pride and accomplishment.

I like the sock puppet kit. I made these as a kid and this is still a great plaything for the child’s imagination.

Legos, i loved as a child, and my kids do too.
I loved my microscope as a kid. I think it would help a kid today spark a fascination with science and discovery!

mad libs was a lot of fun thanks
I loved Legos – the kind that just came in a big box with an assortment of blocks and things… not the kits of today. I had to use my imagination to build something! And then, it was fun to take it apart and make something else. Having to use their imagination would be good for kids today instead of just blindly following the instructions to build the ‘kit of the day’ and done…
Make Your Own Sock Puppets! My gramma and I used to make them! I think they’re great for kids because not only do they learn a craft and accomplish something, puppets help kids communicate!
Have a great day!

I am an avid reader and was as a kid, but one of the best gift I recieved was a pink diary w/a lock. It not only helped with my technical writing skills, but helped me w/ organizing my thoughts. My favorite game to play with slightly older kids is Racko and Scrabble.
I used to play with paper bag puppets- of course they didn’t come in a kit like they do now at Borders. I had a lot of fun playing with the puppets as a kid, so did my kids, and now some of my grandkids do.
they offer a my first plane model set, I used to make models with my dad liek that all the time! its still a fun activity today, because building things like that never grow outdated!

I’ve spent hours at Borders over the past 3 weeks and I always end up in the board games section. It was my favorite past time as a child and now my own children love to play with my husband and I. Borders has become so good at offering the best board games today. My “go-to” game of my past is now the same today with my kids – “Yahtzee” and there is a new spin on it (as there always is) that has proven very fun called “Yahtzee Free for All,” which is the best spin yet. I also loved playing Win, Lose or Draw and Pictionary. Today there is one called “Luck of the Draw” that has quickly made it to our family’s favorite. There’s been no funner version of a drawing game in my 44 years of living.
Our family really enjoys fast paced, creative thinking games like Taboo (my fav) and Scattegories as well as card games. So I would immediately add to our collection the following board games we have been wanting: Pictureka; Quiddler; Beat the Parents; Catch Phrase; Buzz Words; Blokus and Flinch. I would also purchase the Lego Avent Calendar.

The one game I saw that I remember and would recommend is Scrabble… lots of fun and teaches good spelling and vocabulary skills.
I saw paper bag puppets on their site, and I think they would be good for today’s kids because they spark hands-on creativity. We had a blast with those when I was a kid.

I am happy to see Borders carries Lego building blocks. I used to play with Legos often as a child, spending countless hours building vehicles, ships and buildings. The best toys are the ones that inspire creativity in a child, and Lego’s limitless possibilities fire the imagination like few other toys. Thank you for the chance to win.

S’Match – updated Memory game. loved playing memory as y0u had the traditional cad games, but you could use a regular deck of cards, or as we did, we made matching pictures when I was little. It’s a great learning game and stretches the mind.

A charlie brown christmas book. I can remember reading this as a kid and last year I bought a copy for my son. He loves it! It’s a great book w/ NO violance, etc. & that’s what makes it great
Ok…so i had a blonde moment…i wrote about a book instead of a toy or game
I went back to check out their games and was surprised to see the variety of matching games. I loved playing the matching game as a kid but only remember one “plain jane” version and definately not the variety they have available at borders!
Pirates of the Tub looks like fun. I remeber when I was young, I had a dew duscks and a boat to play with in the tub.
I remember playing with colorforms as a kid. I think these are still great for my kids today because they use their imagination.

I used to play with my brother’s blocks all the time. It’s still a great thing for kids to play with today because simple, creative toys like that are always the best.
had lots of fun with legos when i was a kid
I loved LEGO sets when I was a kid. Now the sets are even better with kits that make moving roller coasters and spaceships. My kids will be able to create anything they can imagine.
We always played monopoly as a family and now I play with my husband and kids

Borders has Scrabble on DVD. I played and loved Scrabble as a kid and it’s still a great game for kids for the obvious reasons… it makes you think and teaches you words.
Monopoloy is a current game for today.
My kids would love the Make Your Own Sock Puppet. I remember making one when I was little.

The Farm Finger Crayons look like fun. When I was younger I colored all the time. It was so fun!
I used to love Pick Up Sticks and Chutes and Ladders. Borders tous are really great too.
I remember making my own sock puppet as a kid, and the kit would be great fun today. Definitely helps when they get to use their imagination and make something on their own
I still remember my first chemistry set. It’s what got me interested in a career in science. Perhaps it will inspire others as well.
They have a microscope set that I remember having, or something very similar. What a great way to open the minds of children to even the smallest of wonders

The make your own sock puppet kit. I used to love to make sock puppets and both my kids love making them too. Great way to bring their imaginations to life. Thanks for the contest!
I remember playing Triple Yahtzee when I was a child and it is still great for kids. I believe that it helps develop decision making and math skills.
i would like jenga
I don’t think I had any of the toys and games from Borders when I was a child, but I see lots there my grandsons would love. One toy I played with countless hours was Lite Brite. I love how it sparked my imagination and creativity.
