Borders Toys and Games Giveaway

November 19, 2009 by admin - Jennifer

This holiday, as you search for toys & games, Borders has made finding the perfect toy or game easier for those looking for high-quality educational gifts. The bookseller recently expanded its toys & games selection in more than 500 stores.  Shelves are stocked with items from leading brands like Creativity for Kids, Thinkfun, Scientific Explorer, ALEX and Blue Orange Games. These brands are known for products that foster creativity and help to build cognitive skills in children.

I have recently been given the opportunity to shop at Borders newly expanded toy section at one of their locations here in Orlando. I was very impressed with the new layout. Awhile back their toy section was just put in a little corner that seemed cramped while all the books had a wider area for display, which is fine because as most of us know Borders is a book store. But I will say that on this trip the way I saw Borders changed. I can actually say that they have a very good selection of toys, some that we haven’t been able to find in other toy stores.

My daughter found Webkinz that she hasn’t been able to find any where else. Two of which were retired. For my youngest daughter I found Melissa & Doug toys which I absolutely love, and my son found a few magic kits that he wanted to get. I am shocked by the amount of toys and games they have in their store and will no longer view them as just a book store.

My kids were so excited to be let loose in the toy area, but I made them promise me one thing. They could each get something as long as we bought one toy for a less fortunate child. I was so proud of them. We ended up getting Webkinz, Big Trucks for my Nephew, a play Pizza set for my Niece as well as some Ni Hao Kai-Lan stuff for her birthday. And Color-forms…I freaked out and had my kids (and a few shoppers) looking at me funny when I found these. I haven’t seen a set since I was a kid and it brought back so many memories. So I bought a Yo Gabba Gabba set for my toddler. We had so much fun walking through the department and the staff was so friendly. And my favorite part was this shopping trip has finally got me excited about the upcoming holidays. It was a fun trip.

Special thanks to Borders who provided me with a gift card to shop their toys and games area for the holidays.

Borders has been so wonderful to not only offer me a gift card to shop for the holidays but they have generously donated two $100 Gift Cards for two lucky Dirty Shirt readers to win. Please see and follow the rules below to enter to win one today!

What a great selection of toys. My kids would love the Make Your Own Sock Puppet.

My First Backyard Explorer Kit would be fun, but it’d be even better if it were an actual “kit” and not a dvd. We had things that required imagination and doing, Tinker Toys, Lincoln Logs, etc. My 3yo niece loves to come and play with my kids’ Legos…and no electricity required.

  10. Adrienne Gordon says:

They’d love the Make Your Own Hand Puppet Kit.

  11. Selene M. says:

My children are grown but I would get the Magic Science Wizard’s Kit for my grandchildren.

I remember playing Dominos for hours on end. It’s a great child’s game because it’s simple, educational, and has variations to make it exciting. Unfortunately, there is no Dominos game on the list of toys for sell.

I loved LEGOs and had several sets in my childhood. I think they are timeless and would still make great toys for kids today. Playing LEGO needs creativity, imagination and patience, definitely a great choice for parents while picking toys.

I loved writing in it everyday( I found it in storge & laughed when I had seen some of the things that were written and that I had drawn in it:) I think that kids these day’s would benefit from a lot of the toys that we had when we were little, not like all of the electronics and things that they have now:( We grew up to be just fine without the xbox, wii, nintendo ds, out black and green computer screens, our bikes, and roller racers. Maybe that is what my son needs, is a big reality check without all of these things!

Borders sells books that are bundled with craft supplies such as “Potholders and Other Loopy Projects” by Klutz. When I was a girl I had a blast making potholders, with colorful cotton loops woven on a square metal frame, and giving them for presents to my mom and grandmothers. Crafts allow kids to be creative and feel pride in accomplishment.

Well, I’m so old that the Borders site didn’t have anything I actually remember playing with, but this comes close: Dora’s My First Crystal and Fizz Adventure Kit. Of course there was no Dora, but it has the same principles as my old crystal growing kit.

I think this is good for kids today for several reasons. One, it is great to be able to watch your crystals grow, and this is a good lead-in to making homemade sugar crystal candy. Two, it is a great way to combat the wrong idea that science is hard or boring, this shows how fun science can be. Three, it’s geared toward girls and I consider that a plus because so many science-related activities that are sold to kids are more geared for boys. Four, it’s one of those “look what I did” things for kids, gives them a sense of pride and accomplishment.

  347. Judith says:

I’ve spent hours at Borders over the past 3 weeks and I always end up in the board games section. It was my favorite past time as a child and now my own children love to play with my husband and I. Borders has become so good at offering the best board games today. My “go-to” game of my past is now the same today with my kids – “Yahtzee” and there is a new spin on it (as there always is) that has proven very fun called “Yahtzee Free for All,” which is the best spin yet. I also loved playing Win, Lose or Draw and Pictionary. Today there is one called “Luck of the Draw” that has quickly made it to our family’s favorite. There’s been no funner version of a drawing game in my 44 years of living.

Our family really enjoys fast paced, creative thinking games like Taboo (my fav) and Scattegories as well as card games. So I would immediately add to our collection the following board games we have been wanting: Pictureka; Quiddler; Beat the Parents; Catch Phrase; Buzz Words; Blokus and Flinch. I would also purchase the Lego Avent Calendar.

I am happy to see Borders carries Lego building blocks. I used to play with Legos often as a child, spending countless hours building vehicles, ships and buildings. The best toys are the ones that inspire creativity in a child, and Lego’s limitless possibilities fire the imagination like few other toys. Thank you for the chance to win.
