For Maggie Lamond Simone, sarcasm was always a means of survival and words her weapon of choice.
Her second-grade teacher worried about a child so flippant at such a tender age. Twenty years later, as a police officer escorted a drunken Simone away from the car she had just wrecked, she asked him to drop her not at home but at the bar where her friends waited. He didn’t laugh.
Simone quit drinking the next day. When she finally came up for air a few years later, she was afraid that she wouldn’t be funny without the alcohol. But she had a startling revelation: she wasn’t funny in the first place—the world was. And she started writing about it.
Fifteen years and countless words later, Simone’s column has addressed dating, marriage, pregnancy, motherhood and menopause with a caustic wit and a healthy disrespect for perfection. Through humor and the occasional dose of tears, she’s given us permission to laugh at ourselves, and shown us that perfection is like a dog chasing a car – the fun is in the pursuit.
Maggie Lamond Simone is a national award-winning columnist and author of Sophie’s Sounds and an upcoming memoir, Body Punishment. She earned a Bachelor’s Degree in 1983 from Hobart and William Smith Colleges, Geneva, NY, and a Master’s Degree in 1992 from S.I. Newhouse School of Communications, Syracuse University, Syracuse, NY. She lives in Central New York with her husband and two children.
I really enjoyed this book, as I always like to see the “funny” in most life situations and if you want that then Maggie Lamond Simone’s book From Beer to Maternity is the book for you. Taking a look at many of the curves that life throws at you, from her perspective is just hilarious! Some of her experiences are eerily like some I have had throughout my life, like finally realizing that I had to let go of my adolescent life once I was married, which to me was a strange thing seeing as I felt I had just come into. I recommend everyone add From Beer to Maternity to their library.
