Skuut Balance Bike Review

The Skuut is a wooden bike for children ages 2 – 5. It has no pedals and no training wheels. Children kick off the ground as if running, thus pushing or “skuut-ing” themselves and the bike forward. The Skuut is perfect for learning balance, steering, coordination and independence. Having mastered balance on the Skuut, the transition to a traditional two wheeler bike is easy.

The Skuut is the perfect bike, one I wish I had for all my kids as they were growing up and progressing on to riding bikes. Could have saved my son and middle daughter a whole lot of skinned knees and elbows if they had a Skuut to teach them how to balance first. And my toddler is thrilled with her new Skuut. After reviewing the one we received I have nothing but good things to say about it.

Skuut Bike

I love the Skuut. My daughter sat on it and started to just walk forward, then backwards, she seemed to like going backwards more. She did that for about a week, and then I noticed that she was pushing forward and lifting her feet up and kind of coasting along. In the beginning she didn’t have a lot of power behind her push offs so she wasn’t coasting for long but eventually she got some power behind it to coast a pretty good distance. Thankfully her feet reached the ground (which you should make sure of before use as it is their way to control the bike, the seat is adjustable) and she stopped herself from leaning too far to one side, kind of like how training wheels would on a bike. Within 4 weeks she has gained the confidence to push off hard, glide a bit, put her feet down and run and glide some more. She absolutely loves this and asks me everyday to ride it by saying “run” and pointing to the door where we keep it. I am so happy to have had the chance to review the Skuut, it has provided my daughter a fun way to learn to ride before she is ready for a bike with pedals. We bought a Skuut for my son a few years ago and he is now ready for a real bike, but he is having a hard time learning to pedal. We thought we’d never have to use training wheels, but we do. Hopefully it won’t be for long. We did like it though.

    Jen,

Having to use training wheels doesn’t always help in learning to pedal. If your child has learned balance from the balance bike, it may be time to hold the seat of the bike and get them comfortable with pedaling. I had the same issue with my 3 year old, he didn’t understand that once build the momentum of pedaling, it gets easier. Don’t put the training wheels on, they won’t help.
