Teenagers Suck Review And Giveaway

Teenagers Suck

Mood swings? Check. Eye rolls? Check. Slamming dorrs and easily annoyed teens? Check. Check. Let’s face it: Teenagers Suck. In this emergency parenting guide, Joanne Kimes and R.J. Colleary take you on a humorous but helpful ride through teenage troubles, and teach you how to:

  • Pick your battles (Do you ignore or forbid the bellybutton ring and lower back tattoo?)
  • Handle the Clash of the Curfew
  • Talk to your teen when he’s constantly text messaging
  • Tackle the oh-so uncomfortable but very important topic of teen sex
  • Address peer pressure (Because their friends are doing way worse things than jumping off that proverbial bridge!)

With an equal dose of empathy and humor, Kimes and Colleary expertly guide you through this traumatic, tender, and (dare we say it) sometimes terrific part of raising kids.

The Ten Commandments Of Parenting Teenagers

  1. You are always right. And if you’re not always right, it’s because your parents messed you up when you were a kid.
  2. Praise in public, criticize in private. Most people do the opposite. Don’t be like most people.
  3. Yes, you do have to tell them a thousand times. Stop counting and get over it. Now tell them again.
  4. Your teens are smarter than you think, and stronger than you realize. So don’t go acting all superior just because you have wrinkles and credit cards.
  5. Remember they are growing up a lot faster than you did. Advantage, you. Growing up fast is way overrated.
  6. When they really screw up is when they need you most. If your parents comforted you in those situations, remember how good it felt? And if they didn’t, remember how much worse it made you feel?
  7. Their defeats are 50% yours, but their victories are 100% theirs. Not exactly sure what that means, it showed up in a fortune cookie. But it feels true.
  8. Remind yourself, they won’t be teenagers forever. Someday you will look back on these years and laugh. Definitely. Probably. Maybe.
  9. Love them enough to let them hate you. Don’t be their friend. Be their parent. Friends come and go. You’re all-in.
  10. Whatever doesn’t kill you, makes you bleed internally.

This book flat out cracked me up! I am in the midst of losing my mind with my teen son, sometimes… He is a good kid, a lot better than I was at his age that’s for sure, but man o’ man does he know what buttons to push with me. We could be fine one day talking and joking around, and even letting me tease him about his girlfriend (in a good way of course) and then the next day he sets me off and we either argue all day or just don’t speak.

This book made me laugh out loud countless times and has helped me see alternative ways for me to look at things and has helped me deal with some pretty big obstacles with him. With sections like You Pierced What? and Tat’s Ridiculous: Think Before You Ink I found so many things to come back with when these topics come up. And it’s not just for teenage boys, there is a whole slew of goodies on how to deal with your teenage daughter too. Which will be very helpful in a few years…ugh!

I would like to share this great book with one lucky Dirty Shirt reader who is struggling to get a grip on their child’s teen years. See rules below to win a copy of Teenagers Suck

We’re past teenage years now but when ours were there we remember when our son would say he was going to his room to study and we’d find out that he was doing anything but studying. It really got the anger going. Thanks for the wonderful giveaway.

The one thing that my teenage daughter does that drives me up the wall is “selective listening.” She never forgets anything that is said when it is something she wants, but if I told her to do the dishes she says hours later, “I didn’t hear you tell me.”

That boy isn’t even a teenager yet (will be in July) and he’s starting to DRIVE ME CRAZY! One thing he’s been doing is when I tell him something, he’ll say “What?!” like he can’t believe I had the nerve to say something to HIM. ohhh…. Sometimes I just have to take a breath and walk away!

My teenage daughter is very good for the most part but sometimes she gets an urging to be extremely sarcastic or belittle me. I love her to death, but sometimes she can get on my nerves. She’ll admit that I get on hers as well. So I guess we equal out. Wouldn’t trade her for the world though.

Well, I don’t have a teenager (not yet anyways!) but my best friend does and she says that the most obnoxious thing her daughter does is that when she goes to take a shower, she takes off all of her clothes and drops them on the floor…RIGHT NEXT TO THE HAMPER! Not in the hamper, but next to it. Unbelievable :) Thanks for the giveaway!

It’s his job to empty the dishwasher. When he puts away pans and bowls, he just places them on top of the ones in the cabinet, rather than stacking them so the larger ones are on the bottom. I’ve held seminars on how to do this properly, I’ve photographed and mapped the cabinet when it’s done right, and I’ve made him redo it when it’s a mess. He still doesn’t get it. Aaarrgghh.
