Everyone thinks Vicky has an attitude problem…
Well, if being honest enough to say what you’re really thinking instead of sugar coating your words to please others or mature enough to realize that while money can’t make you happy not having it can surely make you unhappy means having an attitude, then let them think what they like! Seventeen-year-old Vicky was proud of her honesty and realism.
Even though her best friends didn’t always agree with her, they got where she was coming from, unlike her mom. It seemed like all she and Vicky did lately was argue about Vicky’s attitude!
After Vicky’s dad, and entrepreneurial dreamer, was plagued by a string of failed business dealings, he abandoned them with his low self-esteem in tow, leaving her mom to work at a job she hated for years to provide a good living for herself and only daughter. Vicky thought of all people, this would make her mom understand that her attitude was her lifeline! And it was, having always served her well-until her world began to crumble around her, that is.
Follow Vicky as she tenaciously clings to her comforting mindset like a life vest, struggling to keep herself afloat in a sea of complicated relationships, mean spirited girls, financial setbacks and the emotional turmoil that accompanies her passage to adulthood.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
In her debut novel, a first-place winner in the Arizona Authors Association Annual Literary Awards contest, Ludmila “Mila” Bernadkin draws on her experience as a teacher, mother and advanced graduate of the Institute of Children’s Literature to identify with the tremulous world of confusing emotions and mixed messages of “maturity” today’s teens live in as they feel their way through the process of becoming young adults.
Born and raised in Odessa, Ukraine, a beautiful resort city on the Black Sea, Bernadkin emigrated from the former Soviet Union and came to the United States in 1977. She graduated from the Brest Music College with a BA-equivalent degree in theory of music and music literature, and accepted a teaching position at a children’s music school. After moving to the States, she became a Senior Programmer-Analyst, working at several of the largest financial institutions in New York City. However, medical reasons forced her early retirement, which turned out to be a blessing as she realized her life-long dream of becoming an award-winning published writer.
Bernadkin, who loves to travel, listen to music and read, now lives in Brooklyn, New York, with her daughter, a graduate student working on her masters.
My Thoughts
I could not put this book down as page after page was filled with turmoil through the eyes of a seventeen-year-old. There are some parts of this book that I laughed a little and cried a lot, something touched me about this book in a way that only one who has lived through some of the situations can feel. Most teens can identify with her as most of what she goes through in the book does actually happen on a regular basis. But in this story you see how one girl overcomes many obstacles to find herself on a road to discover what she truly wants out of life. A great story from front to back that I recommend to everyone, especially those with tween/teen age daughters, if they have an attitude there may be a deeper reason as to why. Loved this book!
Mila Bernadkin has generously offered a signed copy of her book, The Attitude Girl, to one lucky Dirty Shirt reader. Please see rules below and enter today…
To be honest…I think that would be me. I hate to admit it, but I guess I can have an attitude about certain things or towards certain people. It really does depend on the situation though.
My “attitude girl” is my youngest sister who is 21. I won’t go into why only to say it takes a lot for her to learn lessons and bounce back on her feet. Fortunately my mom and dad are very supportive.
