The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Soccer Basics Review & Giveaway

Soccer Book

Soccer has long been the world’s most popular sport. Even here in the U.S., where soccer still trails other sports at the professional level, its popularity continues to grow. In fact it’s one of the fastest-growing sports at the youth level with more than 3 million participants between the ages of 6 and 14.

While their children are embracing soccer, however, there are many parents still struggling to fully understand the game. After all, they grew up playing baseball, football and basketball. So each spring, a growing number of parents-with folding chairs and water bottles in hand–escort their little ones to the soccer field, continuing their quest to understand that other game called “football.”

The Complete Idiot’s Guide® to Soccer Basics explains anything and everything a parent or new coach (often a parent with no soccer experience) needs to know to understand the game and make the most of their children’s soccer experience. Topics include:

  • Deciding where a child should play (AYSO or USSF program, recreational or travel team, etc.)
  • What equipment is needed for games and practices
  • Rules of the game and overview of the playing field
  • Player positions and how they vary with age
  • Dribbling techniques
  • Passing techniques
  • Shooting techniques
  • Defensive techniques
  • Goalie techniques
  • Player formations
  • Plays and strategies
  • Parent etiquette and participation
  • Running or helping out with a practice

About the Author – Sam Borden (Fairfield, CT) has more than 20 years of playing and coaching soccer. Starting in the recreation leagues at age 5, Sam quickly progressed through a number of travel teams before playing in the World Youth Cup at the age of 16. He later coached soccer and became a certified referee. After college, Sam covered sports for the New York Daily News for five years, first as a generalist covering golf, tennis, the NBA, horse racing, and everything in between, and later as the lead writer covering the Yankees. He also served as a guest analyst on SportsCenter, Quite Frankly with Stephen A. Smith, and Daily News Live! In 2007, Sam co-authored the biography of Chien-Ming Wang, Ace in America. He is currently an award-winning sports columnist for The Journal News in New York.

I played soccer a bit when I was young for fun and I really love the sport. My tween has been looking into playing for our county and I wanted to find a book that would help me explain how to play to her in a way that she could understand. The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Soccer Basics is the perfect book and I was so happy when I got the chance to review it. If you want to learn soccer in its basic form then this is the book for you. I have been given the opportunity to also giveaway a copy to a Dirty Shirt reader. See below for rules:
