Walmart Holidays Giveaway

December 15, 2009 by

In November, Walmart took steps to help Americans share a memorable Thanksgiving with its Thanksgiving Dinner for Eight for as low as $20.  Now, with Christmas and New Year’s right around the corner, Walmart has two great encores — Christmas Dinner for Eight for only $30 and a New Year’s Eve party for 10 for under $40. With help like this, Moms don’t have to cut corners or sacrifice taste or quality when entertaining this winter.

With the current state of the economy I know that my plans have fallen back a little as feeding a family gathering of 16 finds me stretching my dollars a little too tight. What Walmart did for Thanksgiving gave those of us on a budget hope that we could still have a wonderful holiday meal and maybe have some money left over. Well, Walmart has done it again with their Christmas Dinner for Eight under $30 and a New Year’s party basket for 10 for under $40.

Walmart’s $30 Christmas feast for eight starts with family-favorite ingredients, including*:

  • One 10-pound spiral cut half-ham
  • Three 8-ounce cans Del Monte Green Beans
  • One 10-pound bag of Russet potatoes
  • One 12-count package of Sara Lee dinner rolls
  • One 10 inch Pumpkin Pie

* Calculation is based on manufacturer’s suggested serving sizes.

Walmart’s $40 New Year’s Eve feast for ten includes:

  • Shrimp Tray
  • Vegetable Tray
  • Hillshire Farms Little Smokies
  • Pillsbury Crescent Rolls
  • Land O’Lakes Egg Nog
  • Red Velvet cake

I know that this past Thanksgiving I had to get a little creative with stretching my money but it all worked out in the end and I was still able to make my brand new stuffing recipe as well as my made from scratch pies, which is a family favorite. The only thing I didn’t do this year was over buy so I had lots of left overs, this year we stuck to a per serving way of doing things.

Go to http://www.walmart.com/holidaymeals to learn more about Walmart’s wonderful holiday meals and find some great recipes from the Food Network’s Aaron Sanchez.

I have been given the honor of hosting a giveaway for two $30.00 Walmart Gift Cards to help toward your holiday meals. This is a shorter giveaway than normal lasting a week to get the cards to the winners by New Year’s Eve, unfortunately they will not make it in time for Christmas. Please see rules below to enter today.

I wrote this review while participating in a blog tour campaign by Mom Central on behalf of Walmart. In addition, I received a Walmart gift certificate to thank me for taking the time to participate and two to offer as a giveaway.

Okay this may sound silly, in fact it is, but a holiday tradition at dessert time is when my mom cuts and serves her pumpkin pie, she always adds a dollup of whipped cream to the top. Usually it’s the tub whipped cream, but more often she uses the can-style. She then invites all 5 grandkids over and sprays a dollop straight into their mouths. Boy do they love it!!

Save Money: I never buy new Christmas decorations before Christmas. I wait until the week or two after Christmas when things go on clearance from 60-80% off. I have beautiful decorations and lights that look like I spent a fortune but were only a small fraction of the cost.

Meal Memory: Every year I make handmade name cards for our table settings. I have a new idea each year that the families enjoy when they sit down. They always look forward to seeing what the current year’s card is going to look like (or have tucked inside them….)

My best money saving tip is to go potluck! No one minds bring something small to contribute. And when everyone brings something, you end up with a HUGE smorgasboard of goodies and it’s WAY cheaper and WAY easier on the hostess!

A favorite holiday meal memory will have to be this past Thanksgiving when my parents, brother, nephew, aunts, uncles, and cousins all ate at my grandmother’s house. It was the first time so many people had been together at one time for a holiday.

I remember Christmas Eve when I was a child, we used to have fried calimari, beef fondue, meatballs, and other yummy snacks. My Mom always made a chocolate cake shaped like a Christmas tree, frosted with mint-flavored green icing. My family would invite friends and co-workers who didn’t have anywhere to go for Christmas. We’d sit by the fire and sometimes someone would bring a guitar & we’d sing carols. It was a great time.

The biggest money saving tip I have and I know its pretty common but I will post anyway is to combine sales at retail stores with coupons. When I do this, I am able to get stuff really cheaply and sometimes FREE!

My money saving tip is before you go shopping, make a list. That will keep you from buying things you do not need. I also sit down with my list prior to going and look online for coupons for what I need.

At my daughters elementary school we have a co-op for our fruits and veggies once a week. They are organic, locally grown and less expensive than buying at the store . Most of all they taste better!
