Winter Blahs…

I am on a tropical beach with the sun shining down onto my face and a cool, salty breeze blowing through my hair. I am in…..crap! I am still in Montana surrounded by snow piles almost as tall as I am (to be fair and correct it is because plows have been moving to our parking lot, but still it is almost as tall as me!)

I have never, as an adult had to go through a winter, and I am actually worried how down I am about the grey days, snowy hours and cold minutes. I was really bad off last night and the only thing I can chalk all this up to is the winter blahs (and maybe a little impatience). I need suggestions to help me get through the next two months (at least) of snow. I am always looking forward to getting back home but let’s face it, that is still four months away…four months away!!!!

So, if you now live or have lived in the wintery North and have some suggestions to help me get out of my funk please do let me know in the comments below.

Take a deep breath and say to yourself the majority of the nation live is a cold climate. I talked to a man in Cancun a couple years ago and he wished he could afford to return to St. Paul during the winter! Guess it is what we make of it. Hang in there girl.

Vitamin D and / or a sun lamp. I live in NH and I have seasonal affective disorder from the lack of sun during the winter months. I had my vitamin D levels checked and I was severely deficient. I currently take 7000 IU’s per day. I wouldn’t go that high right away but start with a lower level and in the meantime, get your D levels checked to figure out which amount is right for you. Verilux is a company that sells sun lamps. That may be worth looking into as well.
I know it feels hopeless but don’t worry, once the sun comes out, you should be feeling much better. Best of luck!

Although we are likely to have more snow ahead, the days are already getting longer. Hope the extra minutes of light make you feel better.

Can you do things indoors to distract yourself? Movies, books, relaxing with hot cocoa in front of a fireplace? Good luck!

  5. Born and raised Mainer here and I sure know what your talking about. What you need is a beach party~! We did this at work three weeks ago. It gets so monotonous at work. Nose to the grind trying to beat the clock every day and it’s dark when you got to work dark when you get out. Never seeing the sunshine for five straight days and about February we get burned out and it’s time for a beach party! Pretend it’s 90+ degrees out and what’s better than ice cream to cool off right so we all bring something to the office for toppings I mean we go all out. We have everything from brownies to macadamia nuts to butter fingers and cherries. You name it we got it. We make the biggest badest banana boats you have ever seen. We all show up with our ice cream toppings dressed in our tropical shirts, leis and flip flops. Of course we have to have beach balls to kick up and down the halls lol. It’s fun and a great way to get rid of some of those winter time blues. When that wears off and your starting to get the winter time blues again. Try a spa day ~!
Hang in there it’s March and as the saying goes in like a lion and out like a lamb. Spring is coming :)
